Are Colored Contact Lenses Safe to Wear?

I have heard that colored contact lenses actually block oxygen and can then proceed to lead to complications. Is this true? Other than that are there any disadvantages of wearing colored contact lenses or cases where they have caused health problems?

Your eyes get oxygen from the air so all contact lenses block oxygen. The pigment in the colored contact lenses blocks the passage of oxygen more than an equal transparent lens. Nevertheless, millions of people successfully wear colored contacts so check with your eye doctor. If they can find one that fits well, you should have no problems (popular brands are CIBAVISION Freshlook Colors, VISTAKON Acuvue Colors and COOPERVISION Expressions). If you are worried about your eyes then you may opt for a transparent lens like CIBAVISION Air Optix Night & Day which is the most oxygen permeable soft contact lens available on the market.

I’ve never heard of anything like that involving colored contacts. I think if there was a health concern involving them, they wouldn’t still be available for purchase.

I personally love wearing colored lenses. They not only give you a chance to change your eye color but the lenses are also a lot easier to see in their case and when you’re putting them in and taking them out.

As far as colored lenses causing health problems, I don’t think it would be any different than if wearing contacts in general causes health problems. Meaning, there is no difference between clear and colored, if one were to cause problems, the other could too.
