Are Contact Lens Power Prescriptions the Same Around the World ?

If I buy contact lenses from Brazil or Italy in the power -1.25. is that the same as buying contact lenses in -1.25 here in the U.S? Has anyone bought presciptions lenses internationally and found that the powers (in prescription) were the same as the lenses you bought here ? Thanks.
