You will need an exam, which can run anywhere between $70 – $150 for an exam and fitting. If you are interested in disposable colored contact lenses, they will fit you with a diagnostic (or trial pair) to use for a week and then bring you back in for a follow-up appintment (which is included in with your exam price) to make sure they are fitting well, that you are seeing well, and to make sure you are happy with them. Then, after that appointment, they will order a supply of lenses for you. They do make colored trial lenses, but they are hard to get with a prescription in them (because people would get the free trial pair and then wear them for weeks and months longer than they are prescribed for) Acuvue’s colored lens trials all say *TEST* over half of the lens and they are just to try on to see if you like the color. Freshlook color trials, I think, only come in plano (no correction) and again, that is just so you can try them on to see if you like the color. Then a supply in whatever color you like is ordered.
If you are interested in non-disposable colored contacts (the type where you get one pair to last you for the year) they should have lenses there that you can try on for the color, but again, they are strictly for that purpose. You won’t get them to take home or anything.
It is important that you do try on the colors before you buy them because, as a general rule, your eye doctor’s office isn’t going to want to continually reorder lenses for you if you don’t like the color. With disposable contacts, they cannot be returned once the boxes have been opened so you’d better be sure that you like the color you ordered. The nice thing with disposable contacts is that you can order all of the colors if you want…you can get 2 boxes of green, 2 or blue, 2 of gray, 2 of hazel and order them in any combination you want. So if you are tired of wearing green, you can order blue next time around, or get them all and wear a different color every day if you want. With the non-disposable contacts, you are stuck with wearing that one color unless you purchase extra pairs, which can get expensive.
So, getting back to your question…the trials are free, but only with an exam, which is not free.
If your parents are OK with you getting contacts, that’s all the permission you need, as long as they accompany you to the office for the exam. Since you are a minor, you need mom or dad or a guardian present.
You need an eye exam even if your vision is good to determine the size of contacts you would need…and they are not free. The price will vary from place to place. You will need parents permission for contacts since you are under 18.
