Can a Person in a Coma Have an Eye Exam?

I just got a letter saying my mother had an eye exam and they want me to give permission for her to get new glasses.
MY MOTHERS IS IN A COMA.
She has been in a coma since November.
Is it possible to give an eye exam to a person in a coma or are they trying to rip off her insurance company?
It sounds like a scam to me.
I am hoping to hear from someone with a medical background or someone who knows someone who had a exam while in a coma.
I called them but they are closed till monday.

I’m an eye surgeon [not American] . Any one can be eye examined while in coma ,but not for glasses !!!! We may look for increased intracranial pressure , vitreous or retinal hemorrhage ,light reflex or even inflammation ,but never glasses [why ?!!!!] Just make sure what is the case and ask meticulously [ I'm really confused ] and If you needed any thing contact me . The people that wrote the letter might not know your mother is in hospital at the moment and that’s why they probably sent it to you. Check with your doctor before you make any decisions about it/
they may not know she’s in a coma. A person in a coma shouldn’t get an eye exam anyway, there’s no point behind it, unless the docter wants to check for cataracts or possible blindness
They might have given her an eye health exam, but an exam for new glasses is STUPID. Do call them on Monday. See what happend. They might have made a mistake and actually examined someone else.
