Can I Switch the Type of Contact Lens Within the Same Brand Without Problems?

I have been wearing the same brand/type of lens for about 5 years. I was going to reorder online and saw that there are new types for a toric lens within the brand name. I know the prescription would need to change from the DR, but everywhere I have read is to not switch brands, but haven’t found any info on switching the lens type within the brand name. Any advice?

Most contact lens manufacturers make more than one type of contact lens. The only catch is the different contacts have different base curves (the shape of the lens to match your eye). Most times the base curves are really close so you may be able to switch to a different brand made by the same company. For example, Vistakon makes both AcuVue Advance with 8.3 & 8.7 base curves & AcuVue Oasys with 8.4 & 8.8 base curves. If you wear the AcuVue Advance in the 8.3 base curve, you should be able to wear the AcuVue Oasys in the 8.4 base curve.

If you’re interested in changing contacts because you’re not happy with your current ones or you some some new ones advertized and want to try them, call your eye doctor and see if they’ll let you try the new contacts.

You mean for instance, switching from Acuvue Advance for Astigmatism, to Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism I think.

Even within the same brand name, it is still a different lens, different material.

Especially with Toric lenses, the fit can be VERY different. It may be possible to switch, but you won’t know until you have had a trial fitting with the new lenses to make sure they will work for you.

Talk to your Dr. about getting trials.
