Can I Wear Contact Lenses if I Have Nystagmus?
http://nystagmus.wikispaces.com/
I don’t know if I can. I hate wearing glasses and I really want to wear contact lenses. I have nystagmus (there’s a link if you want to know about it) and I’m 14. I desperately want them because I really hate glasses.

Yes, in most cases, you can wear contact lenses even if you have nystagmus. As long as there is nothing else wrong with your eyes that would make your eyes unsuitable for contact lenses. Ask your optician or book in for a fitting appointment
Yes you can. Actually it can put less stress on your eyes and there’s some evidence that the feeling of wearing contacts makes it easier for the eye to find its ‘null point’ or better vision orientation. This may be even more helpful when you get a lot older.
Glasses can have a prism built into the lens to help keep the eyes in the desried position more often.
No-one actually likes wearing glasses but there is a fashion with them that you can keep up with to look ‘cool’. Contacts may not be for everyone because they can cause problems. For me growing up as a child on a farm they weren’t a viable option in such a physically challenging environment.
Hi – my daughter is 10 and has nystagmus. She has been wearing contact lenses for the last 6 months (fitted through Vision Express) and she finds that her vision is better when she wears them. We use the daily disposable type to avoid problems with solutions and hygiene and she wore them on holiday this year in the sea nad pool with goggles, without any problem at all.
Good luck
Frances
