Can I Wear Soft Contacts if I Have Astigmatism?
I have had astigmatism for over 7 years. I am tired of wearing glasses because i know that don’t help correct my vision. I also tried wearing hard contacts but they are such a pain that i gave up on them. My doctor advises me that i cant get soft contacts for my astigmatism, am i allowed to wear contacts?

Beyond glasses, your options for correcting your astigmatism are contact lenses and surgery. I realize surgery is possibly not what you are really looking for to correct your vision….just throwing it out there as a potential option. As far as contact lenses, BOTH rigid and soft contact lenses are available to correct for astigmatism. Such contacts are called ‘toric’ contact lenses. It’s possible that your doctor has been practicing long enough (and hasn’t kept up with recent advances in the field) that he/she doesn’t typically offer such treatments in his/her practice. However, the quality of vision for soft toric lenses is just as good for most people as for rigid lenses correcting for astigmatism or glasses. Most optometrists should be able to do a toric contact lens fitting for you. If your doctor isn’t willing to do this, consider seeking out another. There could possibly be some reason why you aren’t a candidate for soft toric lenses, but honestly, if they fit you in rigid contact lenses, 99% chance you would be a good candidate for soft lenses. Rigid lenses in the past have been noted to have superior quality of vision over soft lenses, but this has changed with recent advances in the field of contact lenses. Rigid lenses tend to have more discomfort and lens awareness than their soft lens competitors. I recommend seeking an appointment with an optometrist to have a fitting for soft toric contact lenses cause it seems like you are interested and motivated toward this.
