Can Wearing Contact Lenses at Such a Young Age Damage Your Eyes?

My optician told me that to wear contact lenses i would have to be at least 16, and told me this is the age when your eyes are well developed enough to wear contact lenses.

In the USA, we routinely fit patients in contacts at 11 or 12. I read a study the other day talking about the benefits of fitting children at 8 or 9 in daily disposables. Is it possible that the optician saw some other characteristic that may have made him doubt you were ready for contacts?

I don’t think it can damage your eyes, per se. What would be damaging is if you weren’t responsible enough and went to bed with your contacts still on. In my opinion, it’s more of a maturity thing than an age thing. I got contacts in Grade 8 and I don’t think my eyes are more damaged now than they were back then. Although my prescription did increase, it’s not because of the contacts. It’s because I grew and my eyes, I suppose, grew as well.
