Colored Contact Lenses Everyday?

I have a friend who has worn colored contact lenses everyday for nearly 2 years. Everyday. I see her all the tI ame so no, I am not exaggerating. She cannot leave the house without them. She buys the contact lenses from this underground downtown store where they sell shoes and other things like that. It’s like she feels NAKED without them even though she has beautiful eyes. She does not wear prescription glasses. I just wanted to know, how dangerous is this?
She wears them from morning until night.

They do make colored contacts without any prescription in them. However, the size of the contact lense itself is something that prescribed in and of itself for people who don’t need prescription, but just want color. She could be lucky, the contacts could fit correctly. But chances are, she’s wearing contacts that don’t fit properly. That won’t necessarily cause any problems, but it would at least cause some discomfort. The danger comes in when she doesn’t have the benefit of getting a doctor’s instructions on how to care for her eyes and the contact lenses. First of all, there is a certain length of time that a single pair of contacts should be worn. Most of them are two week lenses, some are dailies, and some are monthlys. If your friend is wearing the contacts longer than they are meant to be worn, she is causing damage to her eyes, little by little. From the very first day you wear a pair of contacts, your eyes cause a protein buildup on the lense. This protein buildup does not come completely clean with regular cleaning solutions or soaking overnight. Once there is a certain amount of protein buildup on the lense, they should be thrown away. If you continue to wear the lenses anyway, the buildup will block oxygen from getting to your eyes. This will cause blood vessels in your retinas to rupture, and cause scarring. Eventually, it will cause serious vision problems, and will eventually cause blindness in the most severe cases, if not treated. So she should find out what type of contacts she’s getting, how long they’re supposed to be worn, and not wear them any longer than that. I mean each pair of disposables. She should also take them out at night, of course, and clean them really well with a good solution. She should take the lense out, put it into the palm of her freshly washed hands, put a few drops of solution on it, and rub with the soft part of the index finger for a few minutes, in a circular motion. Then the lense should be put into the case that has been filled with clean solution. Every morning, once she removes the contacts from their case and puts them in, she should dump any solution that’s in the case, and rinse the case for a few minutes with very hot water. Never use any soap or anything like that. Then the case should be turned upside down on a clean towel to stay dry until that night. Also, she should replace the case about once a month or so, because germs can stay in it, just like a toothbrush. She should also get regular eye exams, once a year, to ensure that the contacts are not causing any damage to her eyes. Forty bucks is the average price. It’s well worth it, because she doesn’t want to find out too late that there is a problem, and then have permanent damage.

its not dangerous but it can harm your eyes if you wear them over 12 hours.

It is not dangerous to wear them but dangerous because she is not getting them from a reputable supplier like an eye doc or opticion.

its not dangerous at all.as long as she takes care of her eyes and cleans the bofore she puts them in and doesnt sleep in them.

Well it depends on how long she wears the contacts. Does she take them out at night to sleep? If the eye does not get enough air it can cause ulcers on the eye and could prevent her from ever wearing them again. I wear prescription contacts and my eye doctor yells at me cause i wear them to long..so i switched to a more breathable contact.

I’ve worn coloured contacts for the past 10 years – morning to night and sometimes slept in them too.

However, she MUST MUST MUST have regular eye exams as they could be seriously damaging her eyes and she won’t know until she’s FUBAR.

Get her to an optician, get her a contact lens test booked, and get her checked up regularly.

If you’re her friend you’ll do it, for her sake. It’s only $40 or so, what’s that compared to going blind?

It’s a simple, quick and painless test – they shine different lights in her eyes and add a drop of dye to see if the surface is scratched, and also to see whether her eyes are getting enough oxygen from the surface.

A little scratch could turn into a scar could turn into blindness.

Well it MAY be dangerous for a few reasons. Usually people purchase colored contacts b/c they need them for vision, and like the color changes..which can be a bit more expensive, but in your friends case, a fashion trend. However..i don’t not believe they make colored contacts for those who don’t need them. If she’s buying them in some random store downtown, then yes, it could potentionally over time make her eyesight become worse if they’re prescription lenses. Can she see better? worse? the same when she wears them? Usually a optometrist prescribes contacts, so if she’s buying them elsewhere and they’re random prescriptions, then yes it’s harmful to her eyesight. If she knows they’re just harmless and colored lenses, how does she know they’re fit for her vision? That’s the only possible harm. If they’re just contacts that she places over her eyes with no kind of prescription, then i don’t see a harm, but if she wears them all day (like i wear my prescription ones) it just stresses out the eyes because of lack of oxygen, and her sight "can" deteriorate over time. So it can be good or bad depending on what brand (if it’s known brand) and if it’s a prescription of some random kind, or not? Like i said, i don’t know if they made colored contacts for those who just wanna be cool..but personally i think they look fake when people wear them cuz i can always tell it’s not their natural color. If she wants to waste her time and money for something that’ll just make her eyes diff colors then whateva..but since it’s been 2 years you say, ask her if she notices vision changes? Other than that, it must just be something she likes..which in that case, woohoo for her..but really they’re so pointless for fashion unless everyonce-in-a-while. Im sure you and i know that..but ur friend’s in another phase..

Contact’s are safe to wear everyday. You need to have your eye’s checked by a md at least once a year though. It’s not a good idea to buy them from an underground store. If you have your eye’s checked at Walmart they will sell you the colored lenses.
