Daughter Has Her First Eye Exam on Saturday?

She is 20 months old. What exactly will they be doing for an eye exam on such a young child?

      a great question.

the answer is: an exam on a 20-mo old is all objective testing. even if they ask her to try & identify pictures or something, it wont mean much. dont be upset if she cant/wont correctly identify a picture of a horse, etc. they are not going to perform a subjective refraction (ie they’re not going to ask her "which is better 1 or 2?"). they’re going to base all of their decisions on whether she needs glasses or not & whether she sees well or not & whether she has crossed eyes or tumors or anything bad …all by looking inside her eyes with various lights & taking measurements with various instruments. its no big deal, its not scary & its not painful or traumatic.

getting into "exactly" what they’re going to do would require quite a bit of lengthy explanation. but its just shining lights & taking measurements. maybe some eye drops.

Most probably the doctor will do LEA Testing where vision test include different fruits, shapes or any other familiar shapes. The other test could be Random Dot Stereopsis test done using dot patterns or Retinoscopy where the doctor shined a bright light in your eye allowing him to measure how much reflection of light occurs in the retina

What I do in a pediatric exam is take a thorough medical history first. Then on a child that age we could possibly play a matching game, one eye at a time to attempt to check vision. If that isn’t possible, then I would see if each eye can fixate and follow a target. At the same time would be checking their eye muscle function. Then I would check the pupillary reaction. If all is normal and you don’t have any strabismus concerns I would dilate both eyes with a mix of cyclogyl and mydriacyl. After they take effect (about 20 minutes) the doctor (I am a tech) will see them to do their fundus exam and the retinoscopy. On any child to do an accurate eye exam and vision exam they MUST be dilated. There is no getting around this. It’s the most important part of the exam.
      Have fun!!
