Do You Have to Have an Eye Exam to Purchase Glasses to Correct Astigmatism?

I’d like to avoid the cost of an eye exam and find a drugstore/eye care center I can buy a genertic pair of glasses for astigmatism.

You can get glasses on-line without a prescription, but you still need to know the numbers. There are too many combinations for them to stock them all anyplace, they are made custom. So, unless you want to buy a trial lens kit and prescribe yourself, you should just go to a doc and get it right.

You need an eye exam in order to get a prescription. Drug store glasses are only good for those who are far sighted (have difficulty reading or seeing objects close up.) Many optical stores (stores that sell eye glasses) have an optician on duty and offer exams at very low prices, provided you purchase the glasses from them. I do not know where you live, but most of the big box stores, like BJs and Costco also have optical departments. It is best to make an appointment to ensure that the optician is on duty.
If you cannot afford an exam or eye glasses, try googling free eye exams and you will find a number of websites that offer them.
Nowadays most eye care centres which sell glasses have refraction machines, and they can give you glasses to correct astigmatism as well. (spherical and cylindrical glasses.)
