I am going to get contacts soon, but i need more detail. Do you need to have an eye exam before getting contacts even if you know your number thingy? And how much would it cost altogether?

Only an Eye Doctor can prescribe them-so yes you need an exam. They have to measure your eyes-etc. Not always is your glasses prescription the same as your contact prescription. Prices vary on kinds of contact and prescription. Approx- $30-40 per month.
Unless you have an actual prescription then yes, you will need an exam. The doctor will most likely do a full exam of both your eye health and visualacuity/prescription. He will then take a quick measurement of your eye. If you have never worn contacts then the doctor will have to show you how to insert and remove the contacts as well as proper care. At an office that I worked at a few years ago the exam was $90, add the instuctions and it was about $130 total, not including the costof thecontacts. Some places are cheaper (such as lens crafters) but a private doctor tends to be better and therefore willcost more.
You need to have an initial appointment with your optometrist before you start wearing contact lenses. The exam will involve inspecting your eye, making sure your prescription is up to date, and they might give you ‘trial’ contacts which they will show you how to clean and insert. then you go and wear the contacts for a few days and make sure your eyes arent ‘rejecting’ them, which does happen to some people, who just cant stand wearing contact lenses. then you will have to report back and if everything is going ok, you will be able to order a few months supply of contact lenses. for me those sessions were only slightly more than the cost of a normal appointment, and the trials were free. contact lenses generally cost me about $140 (australian) for 3 months supply (i think). i use the monthly wear contact lenses which are great as you can sleep in them and basically forget about them for a month at a time.
