Does Astigmatism Make Your Eye Sight Worse Than It Already Is?

My vision wasn’t as bad a couple years ago and then I developed astigmatism. my actual vision is is near -1.50 in both eyes and the astigmatism in my left eye 50 and for the right eye is 130. I can’t see details in objects far away, and its really really blurry. Is this because of my vision itself or the astigmatism? My mom and sister think that my vision isn’t that bad but I can’t see that well at all.

Yes, Astigmatism makes your eyes worse in a different way. Like it would be harder to bounce a ball and catch it. Your depth perception is off.

Astigmatism is really common and and can be corrected easily with glasses, contacts, or Lasik.

Your family shouldn’t be the judge of how you see. Your eye doctor should be telling you if you need to wear glasses or not. Or, you yourself should know if you want and/or need to see better. There’s no doubt that you WOULD see better and sharper with glasses or contacts. =)

I am +2.75 in each eye with Astigmatism. For my distance vision the astigmatism causes me more problem reading signs than my hyperopia but both are corrected with glasses. The astigmatism causes me to see double vision on street signs, without glasses, so the letter "o" looks like the number "8" to me. But the glasses give me 20/20 correction.

Go to Wikipedia and look up Astigmatism.

Yes it definately does. Your -1.50 isn’t too bad but the astigmatism will add to that. Depending on how much you have it will make your vision more blurry. I think the 50 & 130 you’ve quoted is the axis rather than the amount of prescription which should look something like this

    OD -1.50 -0.75 x 130

The direction of the axis also makes a difference as astigmatism means that either vertical, horizontal or oblique lines are out of focus.

Your mum and sister have a point. Your eyes really are not bad at all. Maybe things in the distance just look a bit blurry but with your prescription you should be able to walk around without glasses and still be able to be a high functioning individual. My prescription is almost ten times yours and I’m okay. And there are people who have twice mine! So smile and take the compliment when people say you have healthy well functioning eyes with just a bit of blur.
