One test is the letter test you refer to.
They cover one eye at a time, and see how small the letters are that you can make out.

Once they agree with you that you need glasses, they bring over a machine that is basically adjustable glasses. They will switch in various lenses for you to look through, and ask you if you see better or worse with the change they just made.

Sometimes they show you a picture in a book, and if you can see the hidden message, they know you are not color blind. Don’t worry, it is pretty easy to see unless you are.

They used to have a gentle puff of air in your eye to test for glaucoma, but with the newer equipment I don’t think you feel even that. Either way, it is not a big deal.

They often put in eye drops, which makes your pupils big, and then they look in your eyes.

Some doctors have you look straight ahead and then use a machine that flashes lights off to the sides, checking your vision off-center.

And there are the simple watch-my-fingers-as-I-move-them-around tests.

None of the tests hurt, most of them are interesting.
It can be difficult saying which lenses let you see better, but in that case it doesn’t really matter much.
You can bring dark glasses to the exam so that things don’t look too bright when you leave the office with your pupils still large. Or you can ask for drops before you leave to bring them to normal more quickly, but then you don’t have the big pupils to show off to your friends.
