How Are Contact Lenses Expiry Dates Formatted?

Hi,
I recently purchased a pair of crazy contact lenses from an online store. When it arrived today, I discovered that the expiry date printed is: 201205. Are expiry dates on contact lenses vile read as dd/mm/yyyy or just yyyy/mm? Could someone please clarify this for me? Thanks in advance.

It just depends on the company. All companies have their own unique way of stamping lot numbers and expiration dates. Some do month/year, some do month/day/year, some do month/year/day, etc.

By the looks of the number that you provided above it would indicate that they used the day, year, month, as in those lenses will expire on May 20, 2012.

However, when in doubt, you can always call the manufacturer (the number should be on the box-or you should at least be able to look up a contact number online) and just provide them the lot number and they can confirm for you the date of expiration.

Usually the contact lenses only contain the month and year in which they expire. In your case this is May 2012. The rule of thumb is that most contact lenses can be stored (unopened) for about three years after production date.
