How Can I Get Over My Fears of Putting in My Contact Lenses?

I just got contact lenses yesterday, and I am uneasy and scared of putting them in. I try to keep my eye opened but I just keep blinking! When should I close my eyes? I know it takes a lot of practice but it’s still kind of scary = Any experiences or stories with people with contacts? Advice and tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Most people have issues puttiing in contacts at first. Don’t worry…you are completely normal. Blinking is just a protective reflex it might take a little while to disappear. Try these couple of things

    1) Opening your mouth as you put in the contact…and if no-one is around say ‘AHHHHHHH’. Makes it slightly harder to blink.

    2) Use your other hand to hold open your lid.

    3) Try desenitising yourself to your approaching hand. Wash your hands….and then practice gently touching the white part of your eye.

    4) Just keep trying…you’ll get there in the end. Its normal for people to have trouble, just try not and get frustrated at yourself.

I had the same problem when I first began wearing them. It just doesn’t seem normal for a person to stick her own finger into her own eye. But you are right, you just need to take a deep breath, tell yourself that millions of people do this everyday, and pat yourself on the back as it gets easier.

Wow. Usually the prescribing Doctor has a tech that will work with you until you can get them in and out on your own before they wend you home. If you did not get this kind of care, you need to call them back and learn proper insertion and removal techniques and how to take care of them. It is amazing to me how many people do not call on their doctor for help and rely on laymen on here to get professional advice. Amazing. I say Call the prescribing office!

Pull your lash up and place the contact in with your index finger…you will get used to it. I started wearing them at 16 and am 32 now, you will be so much more happy with contacts; as long as they are comfortable. Do not be afraid to talk to your doctor if you have trouble with them.

First, ask your self, what am I afraid of? Once you figure out what exactly you’re afraid of about putting them in (maybe you are afraid to touch your eye, you think you will get in infection, etc.) Try to solve it from there. Maybe if you are afraid to touch your eye, you could peel some grapes and practice touching them. Hope this Helps! If it doesn’t, call your eye doctor.

its hard at first but you quickly adjust.

what i do is, i do the right eye first by gently pulling down the skin on the bottom of the eye with my index finger then using my middle finger to hold my top eyelid open, then use my left index finger to insert the lense. Then you should tilt your head back slightly and look up, left, right down and up again and blink twice to make sure it won’t fall out. repeat on other eye

i hope this helps. it took me abot half an hour to get it, with help from my optitian! good luck :D
