"Is my child old enough to wear contact lenses?"

There is no one answer. Physically, the eyes can tolerate contact lenses at a very young age. Some babies are fitted with contact lenses due to eye conditions present at birth. In a recent study that involved fitting nearsighted children of ages 8-11 with one-day disposable contact lenses, 90% had no trouble applying or removing the contacts without assistance from their parents.

What parents should really ask: "Is my child mature enough to wear contact lenses?"

Only you as a parent can answer that question. If you’re considering contact lenses for your child, take a look at how your child handles other responsibilities. Does he or she take out the trash, care for the dog, or follow through with school or other projects? If children need frequent reminders for everyday chores, they may not be ready for the responsibility of wearing and caring for contact lenses. But if they handle such duties well, they may be excellent candidates for contact lenses.

Children are naturally great contact lens wearers if they accept the responsibility for them. They adapt well to wearing the lenses due to their flexible personalities. Kids also develop fewer complications than adults. Younger people usually heal faster and have stronger immune systems. Plus, children often follow instructions about contact lens wear better than adults, so they have fewer problems with over wearing the lenses or not using the correct care solutions.

maybe u should ask i doctor .. because i dont think no one really knows.

  • mcfoxyluver says:

he’s not too young, it depends if u think he is responsible enough to take care of his contacts

  • lover2 says:

no most 10 year olds and 11 year olds do but to be safe ask a docter

  • <3 says:

i think it just depends on when hes ready, and your ready to let him. my mom wouldnt let me till i was 13.

  • Gabrielle T says:

All eyes are the same size, there is no risk for having a complication

  • Melanie? says:

no hes not too young, but i think he should wait a while onger because contacts can be expensive. so if you dont take care of them you have to replace them or you get an infection. id wait until he was a little more mature.

  • Penny Eyes says:

I think 11 is a little too young for contacts.

  • tacori_rose says:

my sister wore them at age 11 and shes 18 now..im sure there even safer to wear now then back then..

  • Katy(= says:

I probably wouldn’t trust an 11 year old boy to take care of his contacts, but it totally depends on the kid.

    Ask your doctor.

  • garfield the cute cat says:

    ask an eye docter

  • ponygurl says:

i knew this kid that wore lenses since grade 5

  • Jilly B says:

As long as he is comfortable with putting them in, I don’t see why not. Especially if he will be in sports…he won’t want glasses on then. I told my 8 year old he could get them when he’s 10 if he can prove to me he’s responsible enough to take care of them. Most are safe for extended use now!

  • MarineWife says:

In my opinion I would say he is just a few years too young. Contact lenses are so harsh on eyes, and I can just picture him playing in dust and dirt getting all sorts of yucky things in there.

  • Melonie M says:

No…He’s not to young Just make sure he understand the responsibility of Contacts and make sure he knows how to put them in right.

  • Mark S says:

Can he keep up with them and what kind of things is he involved in that might cause him to loose them? Age?

  • blackcivic says:

i was about that age when i got mine but i would make sure he is responsible enough to take care of them because he only has one set of eyes, and I’ve worked for a optometrist and I’ve seen some nasty infections due to improper care of contacts

My 11 year old wears contacts but it took a lot of practice. We had to get up at least 30 minutes every morning to have time for his eyes to adjust and have the patience to get them in. He hates glasses so it works better for us overall.

  • Manda G says:

one of my friends started to wear contacs when she was about eleven, and i also read a book that maybe twelve or older is better, because they are more responsible…

  • Joseph P says:

Yes, because if he blinks 2 fast they will roll behind his eyes and also u will have to teach him how to keep them clean and how to take them out and put them in and that would be hard 4 a 11 year old

  • Mila H says:

ABSOLUTELY NOT! I’m 13 and LOVE contacts. I got contacts when I was around 11 or 12. Never stopped wearing them! I know people who got them as young as nine. In my 6th class a good 50% of the student wearing glasses switched to contacts. We were 11 then! I starting wearing them when I was 12. I love them, but they take some getting used to. That’s all. No, his isn’t to young at all!

  • needlewings says:

Talk it over with his eye doctor. This depends on his maturity and if he can keep things clean. I am sure if he figured out he really likes them more than bulky glasses he will find a way to stick to a good routine. Don’t let him wear them to bed though and allow enough time to get them put in in the morning before he goes to school.

  • Maria says:

    obviously he’s still growing, lady!!
u dont want to ruin his eyes at such a young age. boys dont finish growing til at least 20…if i’m not mistaken.

is he even responsible enuff to take care of them?
they may be little but they require responsibility.
would he know what to do when one pops out at school?
will u be able to pay for replacements?

    think about it.

  • julie e says:

I think 11 is way too young for glasses but this site says they can. http://www.coolnurse.com/contacts.htm
This site has a lot of good information
I will give this advice…. Don’t ever make your child feel like he looks like a dork in glasses or he could end up very self conscious about himself. Good luck!

  • Sara says:

It depends on how responsible he is. If he doesn’t take care of his contacts he can hurt his eye and or get a nasty eye infection. Can you trust him to take them out every night? Will he wash his hands before touching his eyes? Is he capable of touching his finger to his eyeball? Those are the most important parts of contact handling.

  • Sarah M says:

If he is responsible enough to be careful with them, learn how to take care of them and his eyes properly and you are willing to spend the money on them then I think he should be fine.

  • Kelly says:

I started wearing contact lenses during the summer before 8th grade…so I was around 12/13. When I finally got them, I remember thinking, "Jeez, why didn’t I get contacts sooner?!" It’s different with everyone. Next time you visit the optometrist, ask him if he wants to try on a pair of lenses, (doctor’s offices always have tons of sample lenses on hand), and see how he feels.

If you do end up ordering lenses for him, I would REALLY suggest looking into Acuvue lenses with Hydraclear. My eyes used to get really dried out and they’ve made a complete 180 since I’ve been using Acuvue.

Hope everything works out for you and your son! Take care.
