I’m not sure what you mean by how the number makes your eyes bigger?

The diameter of the lens just means how many millimeters is it from one side to the other. Some are 9.2, some are 15.

Answer by Dave
Ive always felt that the lenses should fit your eye, and you shouldn’t force eyes to ‘fit’ the lens. Maybe more an issue with selection of base curves, but it also applies to fitting patients with lenses that are too large.

We choose diameter to provide good coverage. So yes, a larger cornea will require a larger diameter lens.

In the grand scheme of things, though, a 14.5 is a rather large diameter lens; thus more prone to being too big on many patient’s eyes (larger diameter is typically used for toric lenses).

What Exactly Does Contact Lens Diameter Measure?

Question by JC: What exactly does contact lens diameter measure?
The contact lens I am currently using is 14.5 in diameter, but I am currently out of the country and having a hard time finding 14.5 lenses. Does this diameter measure the diameter of the pupil/area of the contact lens covering the pupil, or does it measure the diameter of the entire lens itself? Also, what differences will I experience if I switched to a 14.2 or 14.0 lens?
Sorry, I meant iris, not pupil.

Answer by Ashwin P
The diameter of the contact lens depends upon the diameter of the cornea but there is no hard and fast for that.Lens should be 2.0 mm larger than the diameter of the cornea. I think it depends upon the availability of the lenses. No differece between 14.2 and 14.0

Answer by Anna F
honestly, you probably won’t notice a difference. it is the diameter of the entire lens. certain brands only come in one diameter, but what will make a difference is the base curve (the 8.5 or 8.7, etc). 14.5 is actually very large, the largest size, so i would think (although not from experience) that going smaller would be more comfortable, as that part of your eye is used to having a contact lens on it. if you were going from small to large it may be uncomfortable having a lens on a new part of your eye (if that makes sense).

Answer by PG23
It’s the diameter of the lens itself. In most cases, you won’t notice much difference at all. WIth colored lenses, they tend to be 14.5 so that they cover more of your eye and you won’t have your natural color sticking out past the edges.

I would not recommend that you wear a different lens other than what you are prescribed, though. Don’t just order something else because you are out of the country. Lots of websites will deliver all over the world, so just go to CoastalContacts.com and order your correct lenses. If you have the boxes with you, you can just get the brand name and all the numbers you need off the side of the box.

Which Type of Contact Lens Should I Go for?

hi! my prescription is as follows:

            Right eye:
            Spherical–0.50
            Cylindrical–1.50
            Axis-20 degrees

            Left eye:
            Spherical-0.00
            Cylindrical–1.25
            Axis-170 degrees

Please someone suggest which type of contacts should i go for-torics or any other, coz i visited an optician recently who suggested that i should not go for torics considering my cylindrical number is not that high. But i have heard that people with cylindrical number should always go for torics. My age is 20 and i have been wearing glasses for about 1.5-2 years. Also the optician i visited gave me a contact lens pair to try which wasn’t torics and i felt comfortable wearing them, though i tried them for only for a few minutes. I have never tried contact lens before. Please someone suggest me as to what type of contacts should i go for…thanks a lot!
The optician gave me those lens for using only for 5 minutes and i have read in many forums that people often are not comfortable wearing torics..and if i should only go for torics, then which is the best brand of torics and its price? and is there something called the diameter of the eyeball and do opthalmologists in India measure the eyeball before giving the contact lens prescription because i have read that the various parameters of the eye like the diameter of the eyeball, etc, vary from person to person and the contacts have to be custom made to fit the eyes of an individual…please suggest…thanks a lot!

Why Do Different Manufacturers of Contact Lens Have Different Dimensions?

Why is it that Ciba Vision/Focus Dailies only make lenses with Base Curves of 8.6 and Diameters of 13.8

            whereas

Johnson & Johnson/Acuvue only make lenses of Base Curve 8.5 and Diameter 14.2????

            I don’t understand.

Does that then mean that depending on your prescription, you are restricted to which company you can buy lenses from???

Is There a Big Difference Between 8.3 and 8.6 Base Curve in Contact Lenses?

My contact lens prescription is 8.3 base curve, 14.0 diameter and -3.25 strength. Can I wear contacts that have an 8.6 base curve comfortably and safely, or will they slide around/effect my vision? I’ve been wearing contacts since I was about 10, so I know how to take care of them, etc, and I know that a 14.0 diameter is much different than a 14.5 or a 15.0 because my optometrist had me try on the different sizes to see the difference, but he never mentioned base curve to me.

Thanks so much for your input!

            Toric Contact Lens Issues?

            Hi!
i currently use clear contact lenses on a daily basis
            my prescription is
            8.4/14.4 -5.5 -3.25 x170
            and 8.4/14.4 -5.5 3.25 x10
i recently ordered circle lenses in the exact same prescription (except the diameter was 14) but after the first wear it started to make my eyes burn on contact, they turned red and watered constantly. i could not keep them in for a prolonged period of tI ame. the store i bought them from has been understanding about my issues, and offered to let me try a toric lens in a different brand as they believed i had an allergy to the lens i bought. however, they haven’t responded to me for a week and i just want to be able to wear circle lenses! would i be able to see if i just bought a pair of regular circle lenses without the 3.25 cylindrical value? they would be 60 dollars cheaper and i’m so tired not getting a response from the store and not being able to wear them :(
            thanks in advance

Can I Buy Just One Eye's Worth of Contacts Lenses Online?

I wear soft, aspheric lenses. I have the same Power (-3.25) in both eyes, the same Base Curve (8.7) and the same Diameter (14.3). When you come to the check out on nearly every contact lens sight it doubles the amount of money so you’re buying one lot for both eyes. However, if I have exactly the same prescription, surely I can just buy an L or R set (those who have bought online will know what I’m on about).

Another thing too… even though I’m wearing aspheric lenses, my optometrist says that my astigmatism is very mild. Does this mean that I can get away with just normal lenses?

I’m also looking for some lenses that are aspheric, but coloured.

            Loads of questions/requests, I know.
            Thanks in advance!

My Ophthalmologist Didn't Specify Some Measurements Required for Getting Contact Lenses, Should I Be Worried?

I mean, he knew I was there to check if it was ok for me to wear them, he gave me my lens prescription, and it lacks the diameter and base curve, and i don’t know what other measurement, and he just put down i should get "acuvue", but didn’t specify which kind. I tried to buy some, but they told me they wouldn’t sell them to me!
I’m planning on going back to my dr. to ask hI am to fill in the missing info, but it makes me wonder if he knows what he’s doing at all? Is it common for doctors to forget this sort of thing?

            Contact Lens Diameter Importance?

I recently got an eye exam and my first contact lens fitting. On my prescription, I was given the strength, and brand of my contacts. I called my optician’s office a few days later asking the secretary to look through my records and tell me what my Base Curve and Diameter was since it was omitted from my prescription. I found out that my Base Curve was 8.6 but the secretary stated there was nothing on record about the Diameter? So what the heck does that mean? Is the Diameter of my contacts not I amportant?
My contact brand is Coopervision’s Biofinity Sphere. I looked online for the contacts and at certain contact stores they offer different Diameters? That’s why I was kind off thrown off? It only comes in one Base Curve, but I don’t know what’s up with the Diameters and I’m frankly surprised nothing was written down on my record =/
I checked Coopervision’s website (http://www.coopervision.com/us/patient/contactlenses/brands/biofinity/biofinity/) under the related topics there’s a .pdf file called "biofinity package insert" and on the first page it says:

BIOFINITY SPHERE and ASPHERE contact lenses parameters:
            o Diameter: 13.5 mm to 15.0 mm
o Base Curve: 8.0 mm to 9.5 mm
o Center Thickness: 0.08 mm to 0.15 mm (varies with power)
            o Powers: -20.00 D to +20.0 D

Should I go see my optician in person and clear this up?
