Question by Luke: why is my glasses prescription stronger than my contact lens prescription?
ok, so my glasses are -1 in both eyes and my contact lens is -.75 in both eyes. i got my glasses at the end of the school year from vision works. Now i decided to get contacts to wear vision correction full time and i found out my contacts are less than my glasses. Why would my contacts not be as strong?

To answer your question simply? It’s because the contact lenses are physically on your eyes. So your prescription doesn’t need to be as strong as specs which sit on your nose and are a little distance away from your eyes.

It’s because of the affect from the location of the eyeglass lens being about an inch further from the eye than the contact lens. Because the image from a minus lens on the eye is larger than from a minus lens an inch away from the eye you don’t need as strong a lens to see the larger contact lens image.

Question by : How do I convert my glasses prescription into a contact lens prescription?
My glasses prescription is as follows:

SPHERE:
Right: -6.50
Left: -4.50

CYLINDER:
Right: -0.50
Left: -1.00

AXIS:
Right: 175
Left: 165

I’ve been told that contact lens prescription usually need to be 0.5 – 1 lower in strength?

Getting contact lenses isn’t just a simple conversion, it would be best to visit your optometrist and get the proper prescription for contact lenses, especially when it comes to astigmatism.

i tried once before to convert my prescription, but there is another dimension needed, but i cant remember what it is and cant find my prescription to figure it out , sorry
i think its an eye test only that will give you the correct prescription
but if you do get contacts look around on the www for cheap lenses i get mine far mor cheaped than the high street shops

The relationship between an eyeglass prescription and a contact lens prescription is related to the fact that eyeglasses are worn some mm in front of the eye, whilst the contact lens prescription is worn on the eye itself. Thus after being bent by the glasses prescription lenses the light continues to travel through the air for another 12-14mm before entering the eye, whilst the contact lens bends the light immediately before it enters the eye. The distance which the bent light travels before it enters the eye is called the Back Vertex Distance (BVD) and a usual value for this is 12-14mm. This value should be written on your prescription if it is greater than +4.00 or -4.00.

A complicated formula can be used to calculate a likely contact lens prescription from a spectacle prescription, but it doesn’t always work out. So you can’t really be sure the prescription will be exact without using a trial lens and doing an over-refraction to measure any residual prescription.

Plus it’s not just the prescription that describes the specification of the contact lens, because other factors such as the radius of curvature and diameter of your cornea need to be taken into account to ensure the lenses fit properly. Plus there is a moderate astigmatism in your prescription so you might need toric contact lenses to achieve really sharp vision.

You should visit an eye doctor for a contact lens fitting.

Question by …: Can an eye doctor tell you your contact lens prescription by just looking at your glasses?
Because I went to an eye doctor a few months ago and she just looked at my reading glasses and told me my prescription was -2.00 but then I went again but to another eye doctor because my insurance changed and she did and eye exam and told me my contact lens prescription was -3.00 but I can’t see with those contacts.

yes, i think so
the really mean is not “just looking” with naked eyes, but they seems to have some like ” microscope ” but not real microscope to measure your glasses. this is what happened in my country, Indonesia , which is developing country. Probably in yours, it might be much better.
but , it sould be any test again, expecially by ” chart of snellen / straub ” before writing contact lens prescription , just to make sure and to recheck weather the meansurement is the same as the ” microscop” did or not. Bu if didn’t , GP would use the snellen/straub chart measurement for exact prescription

they usually take your glasses, does a measurement with your glasses with a measuring instrument, then begin the eye exam based on the existing measurement of your glasses.

They can look at your glasses and get an idea of the prescription, but contact lens prescriptions can differ – my spectacle and contact prescriptions are very different.

Question by Lela: Why is my contact lens dioptry higher than my glasses dioptry?
My dioptry for my glasses is -1.75, however my doctor gave me a contact lens prescription for -2.00. Why is my contact lens dioptry higher? Is this a standard thing or something?

Just to add when I wear my glasses everything is clear. When I wear my contacts things are more blurry.

contact lens perscriptions are nto the same as glasses perscriptions. However you shouldn’t have more blurry eyesight with contacts. If you do then you need to discuss this with your eye doctor. Reasons can be that the lens is moving in your eye, its inside out/in the wrong eye/dirty etc. etc. You should however get vision just as good with contacts so if you aren’t go back to teh eye doctor.

From what I know, contact lenses are made in more bulk, so they’re generally not as precise when it comes to the prescription. My eyes are -3.30 with glasses, but only -3.00 with lenses. Also, it’s common for your eyesight to not be as good when you are wearing contact lenses, because of this fact.

I just had my first eye exam and was prescribed with glasses. I am going back on Monday to pick them up and I have already scheduled a contact fitting for 2 weeks after that (under the advice of my doctor saying I should get used to the glasses for a couple of weeks first). I’m wondering, what else could they POSSIBLY test for for the contacts? I used 5 different machines (at least!) for just the regular exam! One, I think, tested my near and far vision. One tested my peripheral. One was the eye pressure (air puff) test. One was the retina camera. One was measuring the centers of my eyes for my glasses lenses. What else is there?! What tools/machines do they use to measure the actual size/shape of my eye for contacts?

Before I ever had seizure I was already wearing glasses but the prescription weren’t bad and I didn’t need to wear them 24-7. Just when I needed to see something that was at a far distance. But in 2002 I had my first Seizure and put on Anti-Convulsants. I’ve had a few seizures after the first one but I was having trouble with my vision so I went to get my eyes examined and was given glasses of a stronger prescription. That was about 3-4 yrs ago but just a FEW days ago I got new glasses cuz my old frames were worn out. I again got another exam and found my eyes were worse. I’m not doing anything that might make your vision go bad. But I’m wearing glasses as thick as a Bullet-Proof glass window and I wanna know if possibly Seizure could be the cause. I occasionally still have seizures but I’m conscious and no trembling of the body. Just like few second phases which neurologist says might be caused by stress not by the medication not working. Whats your opinion guys ??

I got a physical at the end of the summer. The nurse asked if i wore glasses or contacts, i obv. said no. I got my last prescription for glasses 2 or 3 years ago and have been wearing them ever since
i just recently has an eye exam and was told to update my prescription.. the problem is I cant afford new glasses for about another month or two
Will I damage my vision if I wait that long to get new glasses?

i just recently got contacts, whenever i wear them my vision can be blurred, and i have to blink a couple times to have it clear again. Is it normal for an eye dr to flip the screens of the part of the eye exam where they ask ‘Which is better…this one or this one…this or this’ to go at a quick pace without giving time to focus?

I have been going to an eye specialist for awhile now because I have been told I have a condition called Chronic Iritis in my right eye (I went to several local eye drs and because of the treatment being above the level of service they could provide, they referred me to him).

Now, over the years and before my diagnosis, I was given many different prescriptions that ranged from being very nearsighted in one eye and farsighted in the other to glasses that were very strong or weak and I would wear them for awhile and one day, my vision would be ‘perfect’ and the next, they made my vision too blurry and gave me a severe migraine and they would end up getting put in a drawer somewhere, never to be worn again and I was no better off than when I went in in the first place and when I called the eye drs, they would simply tell me that ‘my eyes had to get use to the new glasses and that was the way I tested to be.’

A few yrs ago, I was referred to an eye specialist because I have an eye condition called Chronic Iritis and at least two different drs referred me to this guy because they said the level of treatment for this is a little bit more than they could provide me with (a few weeks ago, this eye specialist injected my eyeball with medication that he said is to last 6 months to try to treat my problem).

TODAY, I am suppose to have my first-ever full eye exam with this specialist and while I know that he is really good at what he does, if he starts to go too fast on the eye exam, should I tell him to slow down so that I don’t end up with another expensive pair of glasses sitting in the drawer added to my collection? I’m just afraid that if I say something, he will get mad and not treat me anymore because he might feel as though I am questioning his ability or something.
